Annual Scholarship - 2008
The Pioneer Valley Women’s Running Club (PVWRC) is the first
and largest all women’s running club in Northern Connecticut and Western Massachusetts.
Open to all area women, of all ages and abilities, the PVWRC is dedicated to
promoting good physical health and spiritual fitness through running,
education, social endeavors and charitable ventures. PVWRC is a civic-minded
club that hopes to support a female runner in its local community through this
annual scholarship fund. The scholarship aims to reward a well-rounded,
intelligent, civic-minded, college-bound high school senior who’s passionate
about running.
The scholarship award is $500 and awarded annually to a female high school runner.
Submission Requirements (complete application; include attachments with name as necessary):
- Athletic participation and achievement
in track or cross country (indicate on application).
- Academic achievement (attach a
copy of high school transcript).
- Recommendation letter from
coach (please attach; recommendation from a counselor teacher is allowed
if the writer can speak to the selection criteria below).
- Community service and additional
school activities (indicate on application).
- Intention to attend a two- or
four-year degree granting college or university (indicate on application).
- Essay (attach a double-spaced
typed essay, approximately 1 – 2 pp. addressing how your participation in
running has influenced you as a person).
Selection Criteria (presented in order of importance):
- Essay which addresses the
influence of running on applicant’s life.
- Evidence of sportsmanship
and/or leadership.
- Well roundedness. (We define
well-roundedness as a combination of athletic participation (in running
and in other sports), solid academic achievement, and involvement in
community and/or other school activities.)
- Athletic achievement in
running.
- A thoughtfully prepared and
carefully edited application package.
